I've never waxed at Skinnovate before. What's the procedure?
Prior to your first wax at Skinnovate, your waxing therapist will have a quick chat with you in the privacy of the treatment room. She will only need to know basic information, such as have you had a wax before, how do you usually remove your hair, if you have particularly sensitive skin or any known allergies or if there’s anything else we need to know. This will enable your therapist to choose the right type of wax for your skin and to advise you on the best aftercare. We will record all of your details in our database so we have them on record for next time you come. We do need you to keep us updated of any changes though – for example, if you are taking any new medication.
Your therapist will then explain the details of the treatment you have chosen and tell you what to do next, e.g. to what extent you should undress. She will leave the room for two minutes so that you can make yourself comfortable on the treatment couch before returning to work her magic.
Do I need to book an appointment or can I just walk in?
Located conveniently on Park Avenue North just north of Broadmead (near Morrisons), it is easy to find us and street parking is readily available. We do operate a walk-in policy and because our therapists are so efficient in what they do, you’re never likely to be waiting long, even if they are treating another client when you come. However, we can’t guarantee that they’ll always be free, so you are advised to ring in advance and book an appointment, especially on a Saturday or if it’s a longer appointment time you need.
Will my wax hurt?
We’re not going to lie to you; of course if you pull the hair out from its root it may hurt a little, and more so in some areas than others. But because all nkd therapists are trained in the very latest of techniques, because we use the finest-quality waxes that stick to the hair, not the skin, and because it’s what we do all day every day, you’ll probably find that it hurts a damn sight less than other waxes you may have had in the past.
Also, you’d expect us to say this, but the more you come, the less it will hurt (and that’s a fact).
How often will I need a wax?
We think every 3 – 5 weeks is best. Especially for new clients, it's best to come in every 3 – 4 weeks for the first few times, until the hair growth starts to slow and come through at the same speed. Don’t worry if during that time the waxed area actually looks hairier than usual. This means that all hairs in the area are now in a similar growth cycle, which will make each wax more effective.
After that, you’ll probably only need to come and see us every 4 – 5 weeks, as your hair becomes sparser and comes through at a slower rate. Don’t worry though — we’ll send you a text to remind you when you’re due another wax.
For best results, please don’t shave, tweeze or use hair removal creams between appointments!
How much will this treatment cost?>
Depending on the areas you want to have waxed and how much hair growth you have, male intimate waxing usually costs between £40 - £80
Why can't you give a fixed price for male treatments?
The amount of hair that men have varies greatly, much more so than in women. It wouldn’t be fair on anyone if we charged the same price to mow one man’s massive meadow and tweeze another man’s tiny torso. For this reason, we can’t give you a price until we have seen the area in question and know how long it will take. All of your details will of course be recorded for subsequent visits though, so from then on, the price should remain the same.
I've got very sensitive skin. Will this be a problem?
Absolutely not. Most of our waxes are hypo-allergenic and fragrance free anyway. Every new client at nkd will have a pre-wax consultation, during which we’ll ask about your skin type and other relevant medical details. If you do have sensitive skin, we’ll be doubly sure to use our most gentle products.
How long will my wax take?
Of course it depends what exactly you’re having done and the extent of your hair coverage, but we guarantee that you’ll be amazed by the efficiency with which Skinnovate therapists work. Because men are generally hairier than women and the hair is thicker and coarser, male waxing treatments will take longer than the equivalent female waxing treatments. For example, a male Brazilian or Hollywood wax could take between 45 minutes and one hour, compared to 20 – 30 minutes for a woman.
We will note down the time needed for your treatment on your file, so we know how to long to book out for future treatments.
First-time clients who are not regularly waxed may need to allow a little longer, and you need to account for the time it takes you to get dressed and undressed and pay/book your next appointment.
We will add 5 minutes on to your first appointment for a consultation, the details of which we will keep on file for your future visits.
I've never been for an intimate wax before. How will I know what to do?
As with every new client, you will have a quick consultation with your waxing therapist in the treatment room, during which she will explain about the treatment you have chosen to have.
The therapist will then leave you to undress your bottom half (and yes, for most intimate waxing treatments, that will include taking your boxers off!) and lie on the treatment couch. Your therapist will then come in, do her stuff and bingo — smooth as a baby’s bottom. You may need to help the therapist at times; for example by pulling the skin in certain area taut while she applies and removes the wax, but she will lead you in this process. We can provide a towel that can be used to cover parts of yourself for modesty during the wax.
There will be cleansing wipes in the treatment room for you to use. For your own sake and that of your therapist, please do make sure that you arrive as clean and fresh as possible.
Please note that it is only necessary to remove your boxers for intimate waxing!
What's the difference between a Brazilian and a Hollywood?
As with women, the Hollywood wax removes all pubic hair. A Brazilian wax leaves a strip (as wide or thin as you like) at the front. The therapist can give you advice as to which is the most popular while the treatment is being done. Please note that there is an extra charge for the waxing of buttock cheeks as part of a Brazilian or Hollywood (crack is included).
What sort of wax do you use?
It depends on which area we are waxing, but rest assured we only ever use the best. For treatments such as Brazilians, Hollywoods, facial and under arm waxes we use the new hot “non-strip” wax, which is ideally suited for the job in hand. Hot wax sticks to the hair and not the skin so will not ‘pull’ as lesser waxes might, and it causes less breakages and damage to the hair thereby reducing the risk of ingrown hairs. Although the hot wax will feel pleasantly warm against your skin, it will be never be so hot as to be uncomfortable, so don’t worry about that.
For larger areas of the body, e.g. legs and arms, we will use strip wax, either applied in the traditional method with a spatula, or with the use of a roller. Here, warm wax is applied and then speedily removed with paper strips.
Most of our waxes are hypo-allergenic, although we stock even gentler products for those with particularly sensitive skin or certain allergies. Your nkd therapist will be able to talk you through the options.
Will my therapist be male or female?
We currently only employ female waxing therapists. Don’t worry though, as our therapists wax all day every day, so rest assured that they will have seen it all before!
How do I prevent ingrown hairs?
Unfortunately, men’s backs and chests are particularly prone to ingrown hairs. As a general rule of thumb, scrub and rub is our recommendation, in other words exfoliate regularly and apply plenty of moisturiser to the waxed area. Products with antiseptic and antibacterial properties are especially good for this use.
Skinnovate sells aftercare packs which contain everything you need to prevent ingrown hairs, or you can buy individual products and specialist treatments from us with the peace of mind that they’re suitable for even the most delicate of areas (and if they are not, we’ll tell you).
For detailed advice about the prevention of ingrown hairs, consult our aftercare advice or ask your therapist.
Will my skin be sore afterwards?
It shouldn’t be no, but it is quite normal for a heat reaction to be seen on the skin for several hours following treatment. This may vary from a mild redness to a stronger skin reaction, including red dots on the waxed area for several hours.
What if I get aroused during the treatment?
Occasionally, this may happen, which is nothing to be embarrassed about.
However, due to the nature of this treatment we must take into consideration the safety of our therapists and expect professional behaviour on the part of our clients. If at any point inappropriate comments or actions occur on the part of the client, the therapist will abruptly end the treatment. In these cases the client will be asked to leave the premises and payment in full will be taken from the card used to secure the booking. We would not rebook this client for future appointments and may notify the police if appropriate. The client will be asked to sign a form upon arrival declaring that they are aware of this policy.
